…AND WE’LL SEE YA’ TOMORROW NIGHT…

Kirby’s gone. In some ways, he was already gone, gone from the consciousness of today’s Twins, gone from the mindscape of “Minnesota Nice”, but that doesn’t make today’s news any easier to take. In fact, it just makes it more difficult…

As one of the smaller, colder markets in professional sports, Minnesota has enjoyed a disproportionate wealth of superstar talent. Superstars transcend the sports they play, the stats they post, the games and awards they win, because in a few glorious moments, moments that become memories, memories that actually enrich your life, they sear themselves into your heart.

The first time you saw him The first time you saw him climb a wall. 10 for 11. 1987. 1991. Game 6 (on par with any individual performance in any game in any sport ever, EVER). The pitch from Dennis Martinez The sunglasses at the press conference. Cooperstown. Front row at Target Center. Yesterday. Today.

Today Minnesota mourns, along with everyone else who ever saw number 34 play baseball, because to see him play was to love him.

“Tomorrow isn’t promised to any of us,” he told reporters, teammates, and fans when he retired in 1996. But just five years earlier, with one brilliant swing of his bat, Kirby Puckett gave us tomorrow night.

Now, somewhere in the eternal tomorrow, PA Announcer Bob Casey’s voice is echoing again…

“Now batting… the centerfieldernumberthirtyfour KIRBYYYYYYYYYYYY PUCKETT!”

Jack Buck is calling the game, and yes Kirby, we’ll be seeing ya’…

Calling HECTOR JOHNSON!

Hector wrote us a great email about Golden Gopher football coach Glen Mason on November 23rd, but when we tried to email him back, the address he gave us didn’t work.

Now that Mason is considering a lucrative new four-year extension offer from the University of Minnesota, we want to hear more from Hector. Do you know where he is?

Check out his reference-filled email on our FANS page, don’t miss his Super Bowl premonition…

…and Hector, if you see this, PLEASE WRITE US BACK (with the correct address this time).
